Leading driving experience provider www.trackdays.co.uk is reporting a rapid charge in youngsters taking part in electric vehicle driving experiences.

Its latest data reveals that more-and-more children, some as young as 12 years old, are getting behind the wheel of a car powered by the fuel of the future, with an increase of 40 per cent last year in bookings for its Junior BMW i8 experience.

Dan Jones, operations manager at www.trackdays.co.uk, said: “There’s a current buzz surrounding electric vehicles and this interest is apparently already filtering down to youngsters, no doubt passed on by parents, friends and influencers who recognise the importance that alternative fuelled vehicles will have in the coming years.

“Indeed, we’ve seen a significant increase in bookings catering for 12 to 17 year olds who can experience what the future fuel has to offer.

“And having a taste of an electric vehicle at such a young age can only be beneficial as it will whet their appetite for driving electric, especially if it’s in an awesome BMW i8 hybrid supercar, which is the vehicle that TrackDays offers!”

Meanwhile, the popularity of driving an electric model for a driving experience is also mirrored in new car sales of battery-powered vehicles which saw a 13.8 per cent rise in 2018 according to figures from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Dan added: “Sales of electric vehicles are growing year-on-year and our latest findings are very encouraging for manufacturers of alternatively fuelled vehicles.

“It shows an increasing number of young Brits, who will be at the forefront of the electric revolution, are experiencing driving an electric vehicle in a controlled environment at an early age.

“Hopefully, they will have been bitten by the electric bug when it’s time to own their first car.”
