Many homeowners have a newfound appreciation for the garage. This space is more than just a parking area. Aside from the rapid evolution of automobiles, home life has influenced the modern garage. Future designs will continue to adapt to automotive advancements and lifestyle changes.

How will the garage look in the next 10 years? Expect to see these five futuristic features.

  1. Radiative Cooling Window Glass

Tomorrow’s garage will be synonymous with hyper efficient windows, reinforcing the prevailing trends in climate control, daylighting and seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Double and triple glazing should still be the standard by the mid-2030s, but they will likely not be the most advanced window glass technology. Radiative cooling may take the cake.

In 2025, researchers from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in South Korea developed a new material designed to reduce air conditioning costs by up to 40% or decrease energy consumption by 1,500 watts.

Called dual-sided radiative cooling glass, this technology features layers of silicon nitride and aluminum oxide designed to radiate heat directly into space, preventing reabsorption by other objects. This way, the glass remains cooler than the surrounding air while letting significant daylight in.

  1. Concealed Storage

Secret rooms concealed by disguised doors are all the rage. Creating a hidden passageway to the inside of the house adds charm and whimsy to a utilitarian space, such as the attached garage.

However, a more practical idea is concealed storage. It lends a touch of minimalism to a busy garage while also safeguarding expensive automotive tools from opportunistic prowlers who may be watching as you change fluids or piece together a classic car.

The detached garage is a better candidate for this concept. Enclosing a portion of it to be a hidden area should still provide enough room to accommodate one or more vehicles.

  1. Permeable Construction

More homeowners are recognizing the merits of airtight construction, sustainability-wise. However, many fail to realize that sealing everything to trap heat can also inadvertently trap moisture.

Garages with high humidity levels are detrimental to parked cars. Excessive moisture in the air corrodes metal, damages the electrical system, degrades paint and bodywork and accelerates the deterioration of rubber and plastic components. Mold and mildew growth on fabric and leather is a health hazard and an aesthetic problem.

Builders solve this concern by using breathable walls, such as hempcrete. Green-minded construction professionals use hempcrete with vapor-permeable finishes as nonstructural wall infill to insulate indoor spaces. This material helps maintain the ideal garage humidity level by absorbing excess moisture when it’s muggy and releasing it when the air is dry.

  1. Smart Technology Integration

Smart garage door openers are simultaneously widely available and uncommon. In 2022, market research and consulting company Parks Associates found that only 7% to 9% of households in the United States have these devices. Forty-two percent of them never bother to set up the equipment’s smart functionality, and another 20% didn’t actively connect their smart garage door opener to the internet.

New research suggests that these figures should increase in the coming years. According to Vantage Market Research’s projection, the smart door opener market will expand from $655 million in 2023 to $1.24 billion by 2032. Such growth reflects a shift in consumer preferences for emerging technologies designed to promote home security, energy efficiency and convenience.

Homeowners have two paths to enjoy remote control, online monitoring, voice assistant integration, alerts and other smart features — retrofitting a smart garage door controller to existing equipment or upgrading to a full garage door opener system. The former is practical if your current opener works properly and you want basic smart functionality. On the other hand, the latter is worthwhile to experience more and better capabilities, including seamless app control, LED lighting and quieter operation.

  1. Charging Pads

Today’s garage is increasingly friendly to electric vehicles (EVs). It has a dedicated 240-volt circuit and Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment for Level 2 charging, a smart charger for remote monitoring, scheduling and grid integration, and an adequate parking area for convenient access to charging gear.

In the 2030s, charging pads may be a staple of EV-ready homes. Management consulting firm MarketsandMarkets predicts that the wireless charging market will expand from $0.09 billion in 2025 to $1.12 billion in 2032, ballooning at a compound annual growth rate of 43.8% during the forecast period.

The sheer convenience of charging your EV battery by just pulling up to a parking spot alone should drive its adoption rate. Owners of battery-electric vehicles will lead the charge. Established players from the U.S. and Europe will dominate the market, while China and South Korea will fuel the demand in the Asia-Pacific.

Watch Out for These Futuristic Garage Features, Gearheads

These fearless forecasts depend on how fast these emerging technologies mature, although some are already available for prime time. Ten years is a short period, so you shouldn’t wait too long to see them go mainstream.
