The Important Use of Reflective Conspicuity Tape
Retro-reflective conspicuity tapes are widely used on various vehicles such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, as well as in traffic signs and safety warnings.
Reflective tapes are primarily based on retroreflective technology, where tiny glass beads or prismatic structures in the material reflect light back toward the light source, making the tapes clearly visible in the dark.
Technically, reflective tapes feature high reflectivity, strong weather resistance, and vibrant, long-lasting colors. High reflectivity ensures noticeable reflection even under dim light, enhancing vehicle visibility.
Strong weather resistance guarantees stable performance across different climates, preventing fading or short durability problems.
Vibrant and enduring colors make the vehicle markings visually appealing and aesthetically consistent over time.
In terms of applications, reflective conspicuity tape is suitable not only for private vehicles to improve safety and personalization but also for commercial vehicles like trucks and buses for branding or safety alerts.
Additionally, the reflective sheeting film are commonly used for traffic signs and safety warning signs to enhance road safety.
When selecting reflective tape, consumers should consider reflectivity, weather resistance, color preference or as required by law, and adhesion strength. Choosing the right type and size based on specific use, applications cases is also crucial. For instance, highly weather-resistant products are ideal for long-term outdoor use, while superior reflectivity is preferred for high-visibility scenarios requirements. With advancing technology, reflective materials now come in diverse styles and designs, including personalized patterns and text, catering to varied consumer preferences. Some premium tapes also incorporate advanced printing techniques for even more vivid colors and sharper graphics.
The Major Market Players
Currently there are some famous brands that are available for high end market with premium prices, such as Avery Dennison, 3M, Nikkalite, and Oralite reflective tape, among other brands. It is always advised to buy these high-quality products if you want a tape that can last for as long as 8-10 years after your application outdoor. Of course, there are competitive reflective conspicuity tape options available such as those made in China or Korea, at lower costs.
The Different Reflectivity of Reflective Conspicuity Marking
The colors for vehicle conspicuity purpose are usually white, red and yellow as used in Europe under the ECE-104 regulations, or red/white as used in North and South American countries and other areas under DOT-C2 regulations. There are other colors that are actively used in some specific areas too, such as fluorescent colors, such as fluoro yellow green, fluoro orange colors.
Among these colors, the brightest are white, yellow and fluorescent yellow green colors, followed by other colors like orange, red, blue and green, or even black colors.
So if you want the highest reflection, choose white, yellow or fluoro yellow green reflective tapes, if your local allows it. In this way, you pay the same to get the better performance as regards the reflectivity level.
Besides the colors with their difference in brightness, there are different grades to choose at different prices.
The highest grade nowadays is diamond grade such as 3M 4000 DG3 series, followed by high intensity prismatic, engineer grade prismatic, engineer grade and commercial grade, generally speaking. Then their retro-reflection is from the higher to the lower degree in the above order too.
Of course, different brands grades names could be slightly different, but you know the grades to choose then you can buy at your budgets.
The Service Life of Conspicuity Marking Tape
While the above-mentioned big brand products last up to 10 years, the cheap reflective tape could last for as long as months to a couple of years. Usually, you get what you paid for. Your once off investment could be several times higher than a cheap reflective tape, but its overall service life will be worthy it and you also save the trouble to remove the tape from your cars or trucks.
There is an easy way to tell how long it would last outdoor by checking the materials the tape is made from, if you do not want to pay too much in the tape buying the brand tapes. The right material to get is acrylic which is much more durable than any other materials like PET, PC or PVC reflective tapes.
Of course, if you use them indoor, such as garage or inside the building or home, any materials will do as the UV is not involved to make the tape fade or delaminate or causing other problems.
