PitStop, a pioneering UK automotive tech start-up, has launched a unique, comprehensive and qualitative data platform, offering buyers and sellers a holistic way to evaluate the backstory and value of any car.

Providing clear, concise information into a car’s past, PitStop has been designed to bring greater transparency and trust to private buyers, dealerships and auction houses. Delivering a full servicing and maintenance history, each vehicle is given a unique ‘PitStop score’ out of 100, offering a simple, data-driven assessment of its condition, value and ‘life story’.

An idea born from experience

The inspiration for PitStop originated from personal experience, with Founder Pierre Tanguy encountering the frustration of buying his dream used car. After saving for years, Pierre finally purchased a seemingly beautiful and sound Lancia Fulvia Series 2. However, 24 hours after purchase, the car caught fire while Pierre was driving it to the French coast from Paris.

Pierre said: “I learned the hard way how important it is to do your homework. The car of my dreams had turned into the stuff of nightmares within just one day! I also learned how difficult it can be to research used vehicle history, which gave me the idea to launch PitStop. We have 100s of users already, and a massive cache of data to help both buyers and sellers know much better what they are looking at. It’s also quite fun, as we are discovering, to compare PitStop scores among friends, or even checking scores of cars we see on the street – the first checks don’t cost anything, so we encourage anyone who’s interested to give it a try.”

Recognising the need for a more comprehensive and transparent vehicle history solution, Pierre has partnered with James Stewart, who has extensive experience in the UK car dealership sector and is also known by his social media alias JMSOnCars, one of the UK’s leading car social media channels with nearly half a million followers across all of his channels.

James said: “By gaining a following on social media as a ‘car guy’ you quickly find yourself inundated with questions around the theme of ‘should I buy this one?’. And it is very difficult to offer good advice without knowing the details and history of the car. PitStop offers a solution to this in a neat, easy to understand and fun way. And it’s universally useful, for buyers, sellers, professionals and amateurs alike – a sort of ‘TrustPilot’ for cars. I’m very excited to be a part of it.”

Beyond a traditional car check

For £19.99, users can create their very own report for a car, simply by inputting its registration plate. A score out of 100 will be provided for the vehicle based on a variety of factors tied to the car’s history, offering an overall evaluation of the vehicle at a glance, with a detailed checklist assessing the condition of key components and systems.

The platform delivers comprehensive financial information, including the current estimated market value of the car based on condition and history, an analysis of any outstanding finance agreements, and the vehicle’s emissions-based tax obligations. The report also includes a complete MOT testing history, a record of all ownership changes, verified mileage tracking and a log of any colour changes or registration plate updates.

Going beyond basic servicing and accident checks, the PitStop platform enables car owners to enhance a car’s profile by uploading maintenance invoices and repair documentation, directly improving the vehicle’s overall score, and improving buyer confidence. Safety and security data, such as theft records and safety ratings derived from crash tests are also taken into account for the overall evaluation, with 65+ being considered a ‘good’ score for a car.

Crucially, the consistent scoring system also creates a universal benchmark across cars, helping buyers and sellers to navigate the used car market with greater assurance. By offering verified, data-backed vehicle assessments with a consistent scoring method, dealerships and auction houses can enhance the value of their listings and deliver a higher standard of information to prospective buyers.
