2025 MG S5 EV Review – Bigger, Faster, Smarter – but is it better?
A new affordable electric SUV that’s more refined and packed with greater tech than its predecessor, the all-new MG S5 EV is essentially the replacement for the best-selling MG ZS EV. The S5 EV steps up the game in terms of style, performance, and practicality – while still offering astonishing value – so should it be on your shortlist?
The MG S5 EV isn’t just a facelift of the old ZS EV; it’s a complete reinvention. Sitting just above the MG4 EV in the MG range and making way for the upcoming even larger electric SUV, this new model promises to cater to both family buyers and first-time EV enthusiasts.
MG’s commitment to market-defining value is evident with prices starting from £28,495 for the SE Standard Range, scaling up to £33,495 for the fully equipped Trophy Long Range.
Built on the same advanced platform as the award-winning MG4 EV, the S5 EV uses the ultra-thin 110mm Horizontal Cell battery design to create a more spacious, premium cabin. This clever engineering not only improves range and driving dynamics but also contributes to a lower centre of gravity for enhanced stability.
The front fascia features a Cyberster-inspired split grille complemented by dynamic LED daytime running lights with a distinctive checkered flag pattern. The sharp shoulder lines and silver cladding running along the side add an extra dash of character, while the full-width rear light bar and spoiler add some interest to the rear.
Inside, the S5 EV is designed with versatility in mind. The cabin offers plenty of space for up to four adults. A standard boot capacity of 453 litres expands to a 1441 litres when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded down. This practicality is further enhanced by features like the two-stage boot floor, electric tailgate, and numerous smart storage pockets.
Step inside, and you’re greeted with a futuristic yet user-friendly layout – a far cry from their early efforts. The MG S5 EV comes equipped with a centrally positioned 12.8-inch HD touchscreen that offers enhanced graphics and connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. MG has also included physical buttons for key functions like climate control and audio.
In addition to the infotainment system, the vehicle features a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a wireless phone charger with a suede finish, and a host of driver assistance systems under the MG Pilot umbrella, from collision avoidance and active emergency braking to blind spot detection. The MG Pilot Custom option further allows drivers to personalise their settings – a nod to the increasing demand for customisable tech in modern electric vehicles.
Under the bonnet, the MG S5 EV is powered by a 170kW electric motor delivering a robust 350Nm of torque. This rear-wheel drive SUV accelerates from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds (in the SE Long Range trim), making it feel surprisingly quick for its class. It has five drive modes – Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow, and Custom as well as several regen braking settings.
The ride is supported by a rear Five-Link suspension system, which, coupled with a Continental-developed braking system, provides confident handling and impressive stopping power – with 62mph to 0 coming in at just 35.5 metres. Add in the efficiency gains from low rolling resistance and an effective Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), and you have an EV that’s reasonably satisfying to drive.
The S5 EV is available with two battery choices: a 49kWh option for the SE Standard Range and a larger 64kWh battery for the SE Long Range and Trophy trims. The 64kWh battery pushes the range to an impressive 298 miles (or 288 miles for the Trophy trim).
The MG S5 EV takes everything that made the ZS EV a hit and elevates it with enhanced design, refinement and sophistication – it just feels like a classier more premium offering all-round. Those stepping up from its predecessor are sure to find it very appealing. For families looking to upgrade their first EV the S5 EV is as compelling a choice as the ZS EV was.
