The XPENG G6 has only just arrived in the UK, yet here we are driving what the company calls the second-generation model. XPENG officially launched in Britain in early 2025, with the G6 leading the charge. Now, barely a year later, the Chinese EV brand has returned with a significantly revised version claiming more than 20,000 updates and refinements.

That sounds like marketing hyperbole until you dig into the details. The original G6 was developed primarily for its home market and broader global rollout. This latest version has been recalibrated specifically for European roads, including ours, with revisions to chassis tuning, suspension, steering feel and refinement.

The headline addition is the new AWD Performance Black Edition. Equipped with dual electric motors producing 480bhp and 660Nm of torque, it accelerates from 0-62mph in just 4.13 seconds. Suddenly, this family-friendly electric SUV finds itself firmly in performance-car territory.

The updates extend beyond outright speed. XPENG has revised the suspension and steering, improved noise suppression and upgraded cabin materials. Inside, there are new door panels, revised dashboard trim, a redesigned steering wheel and suede-like finishes on the A-pillars. Front seats now feature improved lumbar support and a surprisingly effective massage function, while a digital rear-view mirror and enhanced ambient lighting bring the cabin up to date.

Visually, the G6 evolves rather than reinvents. The starship-inspired styling remains, but a full-width LED light bar now dominates the nose, with the badge relocated to the bonnet. New wheel designs sharpen the stance, while the Performance model gains exclusive black detailing, a subtle ducktail spoiler and revised rear diffuser.

Power comes from an 80.8kWh battery pack. The Long Range rear-wheel-drive version now offers more than 380 miles of WLTP range, while the AWD Performance delivers a still-respectable 316 miles. Charging capability remains one of the G6’s strongest assets, supporting up to 451kW DC charging and a claimed 10-80% recharge in just 12 minutes. The reality is that chargers capable of delivering those speeds remain rare in Britain, though charging performance is still impressive on more common rapid chargers.

On the road, the biggest surprise is not the acceleration but the maturity. The revised suspension deals well with broken British surfaces, maintaining composure without becoming overly firm. There is some movement on the 20-inch wheels, but it is well controlled rather than uncomfortable.

Performance is rapid yet approachable. The AWD model delivers strong traction and smooth power delivery, feeling secure and confidence-inspiring rather than tail-happy or intimidating. It may not possess the playful character of some enthusiast-focused EVs, but everyday usability remains its priority, and it fulfils that brief convincingly.

The interior continues XPENG’s minimalist approach. A large 15.6-inch central touchscreen controls most vehicle functions, supported by over-the-air software updates. The voice assistant is particularly clever, capable of recognising which seat a command originates from. Wireless charging pads, generous storage and a spacious cabin add practicality, although the lack of physical controls may frustrate some users.

Prices start at £39,990 and rise to £49,990 for the AWD Performance, keeping the range below the £50,000 luxury car tax threshold. Equipment levels are generous, and XPENG’s UK dealer network continues to expand.

The 2026 XPENG G6 AWD Performance is not perfect. The ultra-fast charging infrastructure has yet to catch up with the car’s capabilities, and some drivers may prefer more physical controls or sharper handling. Yet viewed as a complete package, it is highly impressive.
For less than £50,000, buyers get 480bhp, sub-4.2-second acceleration, strong range, advanced charging technology and a genuinely premium-feeling cabin. Chinese brands are no longer simply catching up. Increasingly, they are helping to set the pace.
